Types Of Music Videos

Some bands and artists use hybrid versions of these types where they combine 2 of them to create a different type for example; a performance music video with a narrative sections. Below are the 3 different types of video explained.

Narrative

A Narrative music video is used to portray what the song is saying to the viewer, it is commonly used in pop music however some bands are starting adopt it as a hybrid alongside performance. A good example of a narrative video is Taylor Swift “you belong with me” in the video we follow Taylor through the song a see what she is singing about, the video is linked below.

Performance

A performance video is generally adopted by the rock genre, however is also started to be used within a hybrid with narrative for some artists doing pop music. It is used so the band or artists can show of there musical talent and tell their story through the lyrics not the images on screen. It is also used to make all focus on them and not the other visual elements which do not include them, an example of a performance video is 'Photograph' by Nickelbacks

Conceptual

A conceptual video is based on different themes which are unusual and stereotypically not used. It is used to attract the audience not only to the song but to the video as well through the unusual themes. 'The Scientist' by Coldplay is an example of this type of music video.
